Social Security Earnings Test Clawback Calculator
Estimate how much of your Social Security benefits will be withheld (clawed back) if you work before Full Retirement Age.
Count only wages, salaries, and net self-employment earnings. Do NOT include pensions, annuities, IRA distributions, interest, dividends, or capital gains.
What is the Social Security Earnings Test Clawback Calculator?
The Social Security Earnings Test Clawback Calculator helps early retirees estimate benefit reductions if they continue working while receiving Social Security. If you claim benefits before your Full Retirement Age (FRA) and earn over the IRS limits, a portion of your benefit is temporarily clawed back. This calculator estimates your withheld amounts for the 2026 tax year, details the number of withheld benefit months, and projects your permanent upward adjustment once you reach FRA.
How Does the Social Security Earnings Test Clawback Calculator Work?
1. Select Age Status โ Choose if you are Under FRA all year, Reaching FRA this year, or Over FRA.
2. Enter Monthly Social Security Benefit โ Your monthly benefit amount before any tax withholdings or clawbacks.
3. Input Annual Earned Income โ Wages, salaries, or net self-employment earnings (note: investment income or pensions do not count).
4. View Benefits Withheld & Net Pay โ Review your total annual benefit, clawback amount, and net cash received.
5. Analyze Recalculation Credit โ Find out how much your monthly check will permanently increase at FRA to credit you for withheld months.
Formula & Calculation Method
IRS Earnings Test Thresholds (2026):
* Under FRA Limit: $23,400 (indexed). We claw back $1 for every $2 earned above this threshold.
* Reaching FRA Limit: $62,280 (indexed). In the months before you reach FRA, we claw back $1 for every $3 earned above this threshold.
* At or Over FRA: No limits or clawbacks apply.
Recalculation Credit:
Withheld Benefit Months = Withheld Benefit / Monthly Benefit
Permanent Monthly Benefit Increase at FRA = Withheld Benefit Months ร (Original Benefit ร 0.58%)
Example Calculation
Example: Age 63 (Under FRA all year) earning $35,400 with a monthly benefit of $2,000.
- Annual Benefit = $2,000 ร 12 = $24,000
- Earnings Limit = $23,400
- Excess Earnings = $35,400 - $23,400 = $12,000
- Withheld Benefits (Clawback): $12,000 รท 2 = $6,000
- Net Benefits Received: $24,000 - $6,000 = $18,000
- Recalculation: $6,000 represents 3.0 months of benefits. At FRA, your monthly benefit will permanently increase by about $34.80 ($2,000 ร 0.58% ร 3.0 months).
