Human sleep progresses in 90-minute cycles (transitioning between light NREM, deep slow-wave sleep, and REM dreaming sleep). Waking up at the completion of a full 90-minute cycle leaves you feeling energized, while waking up mid-cycle triggers severe sleep inertia.
The calculator factors in:
1. Average Sleep Latency: It takes the average human 14 to 15 minutes to fall asleep once in bed.
2. Optimal Sleep Cycles: 5 cycles (7.5 hours) or 6 cycles (9 hours) represent the ideal sleep window for adults.
3. Sleep Debt Recovery: Calculates weekly accumulated sleep debt based on actual vs target sleep logged and generates a recovery plan.

How Does the Sleep Cycle & Circadian Rhythm Optimizer Work?
1. Choose Mode — "I want to wake up at X time" OR "I am going to bed right now".
2. Set Target Time & Sleep Latency — Select desired wake-up time and minutes to fall asleep (default: 15 min).
3. Log Recent Weekly Sleep — Input average hours slept per night to calculate your weekly sleep debt.
4. View Recommended Sleep Cycles — Review optimal bedtimes corresponding to 4, 5, and 6 full sleep cycles.
Formula & Calculation Method
1. Sleep Cycle Formula (90 Minutes per Cycle):
$$\text{Sleep Duration} = (\text{Number of Cycles} \times 90 \text{ mins}) + \text{Fall Asleep Latency}$$
2. Optimal Wake Time Target (for Bedtime T):
$$\text{Wake Time}_k = T + (k \times 90 \text{ mins}) + 15 \text{ mins} \quad (k = 4, 5, 6)$$
3. Weekly Sleep Debt:
$$\text{Weekly Debt} = (\text{Target Hours/Night} - \text{Actual Hours/Night}) \times 7$$
Example Calculation
Example: You want to wake up at 6:30 AM (15 min fall asleep time)
- 6 Cycles (9 Hours sleep + 15 min latency): Go to bed at 9:15 PM
- 5 Cycles (7.5 Hours sleep + 15 min latency): Go to bed at 10:45 PM ⭐ *(Optimal)*
