BMI Calculator
Calculate your Body Mass Index and understand your weight category with health recommendations.
What is the BMI Calculator?
The BMI Calculator helps you determine your Body Mass Index (BMI) and understand what it means for your health. BMI is a widely used screening tool that estimates body fat based on your height and weight, providing a quick assessment of whether you're underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese.
While BMI has limitations and doesn't account for muscle mass, bone density, or body composition, it remains a valuable tool for population health screening and personal health awareness. This calculator provides not just your BMI number, but also explains what category you fall into and associated health risks.
Our calculator supports both metric (cm/kg) and imperial (feet-inches/pounds) units, making it accessible for users worldwide. Beyond just calculating your BMI, it provides your ideal weight range based on healthy BMI values (18.5-24.9) and tells you exactly how much weight you might need to lose or gain to reach the normal range.
Understanding your BMI category helps you make informed decisions about your health. Normal weight individuals have the lowest risk of weight-related health problems, while being underweight or overweight increases various health risks. The calculator provides specific health risk assessments for each category.
It's important to remember that BMI is just one health indicator. Athletes with high muscle mass may have elevated BMIs despite being very healthy, while some people with normal BMIs may still have health risks due to other factors like visceral fat distribution or lifestyle habits.
Use this calculator as a starting point for health discussions with healthcare providers, not as a definitive health assessment. Combined with other measurements like waist circumference, body fat percentage, and overall fitness levels, BMI provides valuable insight into your health status.
How Does the BMI Calculator Work?
1. Choose your units โ Select between metric (cm/kg) or imperial (feet-inches/pounds) measurements.
2. Enter your height โ Input your height in centimeters or feet and inches.
3. Enter your weight โ Input your current weight in kilograms or pounds.
4. Get comprehensive results โ View your BMI, category, health risk assessment, and ideal weight range.
The calculator uses the standard BMI formula: BMI = weight (kg) / height (m)ยฒ. It then categorizes your result and provides personalized recommendations based on established health guidelines.
