Formula & Calculation Method
FD Maturity Amount = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t)
Where:
- P = Principal (deposit amount)
- r = Annual interest rate ÷ 100
- n = Number of times interest is compounded per year (1=annual, 2=half-yearly, 4=quarterly, 12=monthly)
- t = Tenure in years
Effective Annual Rate (EAR) = (1 + r/n)^n − 1
Example: ₹1,00,000 at 7% per annum, quarterly compounding, 3 years → Maturity = 1,00,000 × (1 + 0.07/4)^(4×3) = 1,00,000 × (1.0175)^12 ≈ ₹1,23,144. Total interest = ₹23,144.
Example Calculation
Example 1 — SBI 1-year FD: ₹5,00,000 at 6.8% p.a. quarterly compounding → Maturity ≈ ₹5,35,154. Interest earned ≈ ₹35,154.
Example 2 — Senior Citizen 3-year FD: ₹10,00,000 at 7.5% p.a. quarterly compounding → Maturity ≈ ₹12,51,698. Interest earned ≈ ₹2,51,698.
Example 3 — Tax-Saving 5-year FD: ₹1,50,000 at 7% p.a. quarterly compounding → Maturity ≈ ₹2,12,316. Interest earned ≈ ₹62,316.
