Understanding PAYE in the UK
In the United Kingdom, most salaried employees pay income tax and social security through the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) system, where deductions are withheld directly from your monthly paycheck.
Tax-Free Personal Allowance & Tapering
- Standard Personal Allowance: The first ยฃ12,570 of your annual income is tax-free.
- The Taper Rule: If you earn over ยฃ100,000, your Personal Allowance goes down by ยฃ1 for every ยฃ2 of excess. It is completely reduced to ยฃ0 once your income reaches ยฃ125,140.
2026 Income Tax & National Insurance (NICs)
- Basic Rate (ยฃ12,571 - ยฃ50,270): 20% Income Tax & 8.0% National Insurance.
